Harger album: by date of birth 1774 to 1881
An album (or a few pages of an album to be more precise) was given to me in 2001 by Betty Bailey (via Cathy). Most of the photos are annotated, but sometimes confusing, and the annotations are in different hands. It is sometimes difficult to work out who is who, and the annotations are mostly of the style "great grandfather".. Therefore, the assignment of name to image should be treated with a small degree of caution. I think I've got the jig-saw right, but there may be one or two slips, and those errors must be mine. I do however, have independent photos of JV Harger and Joseph Harger (1809-1886) so can confirm those photos.
NB
- photos are sorted by date order; click on thumbnail image for larger JPG version (approx 2Mb)
- items are listed by date of birth of person shown, as there is no other reliable way of (consistently) dating the photographs
- click on a photo for a larger image; where there are two people in one photo, the photo is listed twice, once under each name
Harger : Joseph & John Vincent Harger, father & son
Background
St John's Methodist Church in Settle was built in 1892. In "On foot round Settle", George H. Brown states that "Harger Bros [held] the contract for the whole work". It was demolished in 2015, with the church moving to expanded premises across the road at the church hall. There were several dedication stones in the rear wall of the church, one in the name of Thomas Harger (1848-1925) and this is now in the Museum (photo below). At the same time, a portrait photo of JV Harger (1846-1926) which was also in the church became available (photo below), taken in 1917 (now with great-grandson). Also, from another source, a large portrait (possibly photograph enhanced by hand) of Joseph Harger (1809-1891, dates clearly shown on the surround, photo in Settle Museum), father of JV Harger, came to light, so here are father and son.
Father, Joseph Harger was born 19 December 1809 of parents Robert and Agnes nee Hal(l)pike. He married Margaret nee Baldwin in 1841, and had 8 children. His occupation is variously given as joiner & cabinet maker, and builder.
Son JV Harger was born 2 March 1846 of parents Joseph Harger and Margaret née Baldwin. He married Isabella née Procter in 1872, and they had one son, Joseph, who married Mary née Wardlaw in 1902, and had 3 children, Winifred (marr Dowdle), Margaret (marr Kitchen) and John. JV Harger's profession is variously given as joiner, house furnisher, and cabinet maker. He was also a methodist preacher

Sarah Agnes Harger, also known as Sally, born 1876 in Skipton, teacher, died 1938 in Leeds Nursing Home, buried Settle. The photo is annotated on the rear with "Aunt Sally 1911". Her sister, Margaret Annie Kirkby Harger married in Settle in 1911, and there is a strong possibility this photo is taken at the wedding. One of the bridesmaids at the wedding was Margaret Isobel Harger. The photographer (indicated bottom right) is "Horner & Son, New Street, Settle".
