Samplers
Very little is known about this Harger Sampler (a Sampler is a piece of embroidery worked in various stitches as a specimen of skill usually containing the alphabet and some mottos), and the identity of the creator is not known. The sampler lists the children of Robert (1775-1848) and Agnes Harger (née Hallpike) (1774-1855), married 30 May 1801. The Sampler is currently in the care of a (direct paternal) great (x3)-grandson of Robert Harger. A list of the children on the sampler with further dates is below the image. All the children are recorded as being baptised at Giggleswick.

It is tentatively suggested that the missing text at the bottom of the above sampler is:
Holy children - read and pray
Love Thy holy word and day
Fly from sin and seek Thy grace
Learn Thy will and Christ embrace
They are humble meek and mild
Make me Lord a Holy Child
This appears as a verse in a variety of Hymn books from about 1815.
Update Autumn 2020: thanks to Paul Wiltshire, two more Harger samplers have come to light dated 1820 and 1824;
